Playa Hermosa

Ever feel like this?

I just love this photo of 'the tree' at Hermosa Beach. Gearing up to take more surf shots (waves willing).

This is Jason (from Las Olas) making some small waves look fun with his new (for him) board. Go Jason!
Check over to the left and you will see a tide chart I just added. I have grand plans to take more surf shots.....

BIG Waves

Conditions are pretty rough and it's raining off and on....

If you wondering what kind of waves we have here, let me just say the pros are out whippin' it up. It's a Maytag washer out there but if you can paddle through it and get out, the big reward is there. Gilbert Brown put on a good show today in Hermosa.

Board from Brasil

This is Harry's board. Harry has been hitting the surf everyday and it makes me wonder, how do these guys do it? Come here on vacation and day after day, get beat up, thrashed around like a rag doll only to go out and surf again the next day. Amazing. They are all warriors to me, the dedicated ones.

Harry's Here!!

That's right, straight from Brazil and this time, he brought his wife, Christina. Today was my first day surf shooting since I can't remember when. My photos show it. Costa Rica always comes through and the waves picked up about the time they arrived. He brought back with him an identical board to the one the waves snapped two years ago.

Ya all (hence ya'll) remember? It was when my telephoto was fairly new and I still playing (still am judging by the photos I took today). Check it out when Harry was here if you missed that....

Let's all cross our fingers for Harry that his board can withstand the challenge of Hermosa's Brokin' da Board Beach.
It's so cool his name is Harry Costa!
Bíenvenidos Harry and Christina Costa!!!

Wipe Out

"Brokin' Board Beach"

When I first bought my home back in March of 2003, I couldn't help but notice all the surfer guys, with heads hung low, walking around with a broken board under their arm. I promptly named my beach Brokin' Board Beach (actually it was Brokin' da Board Beach). I learned very quickly that the surf behind my house was nothing to play with. Even Tom, then owner of Jungle Surf, knew the heartache of breaking your board and offered a free breakfast to anyone that came in with a broken board. Sweet. He's since sold out and moved way down south but I did see him at the beach the other day, checking out the waves with his old buddies (Surf Sandpiper slideshow).

When I passed this sign on my way to Jaco, I thought it photo-worthy and turned around my car to go back and take this snapshot. Later, when I returned home, the board was gone. For anyone reading this that knows me, I WANT THE BROKEN BOARDS. I want to make something really cool. One day, I will officially put up a sign indicating "Brokin' Board Beach" that-a-way...
For now, it's a local secret.

Back on the beach this morning,,, first time in a long time, to get some photos of a friend of a friend before he left Costa Rica today. Those guys were really struggling to get some good rides out of those waves today.
I enjoyed watching their efforts.

The link above will take you to the album where I put today's photos. Hit 'Slideshow' if you want to go along for the ride.
See you again real soon Andres.

What a great way to start off the new year. Bright and early, taking a group shot of the surfers down in Esterillos Oeste. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Surf Sunday

I LOVE GILBERT BROWN!!
I guess I've become a 'Gilbert Groupie'. He was great today at the finals in Jaco and what was more impressive..... after his run, he walked around with a plastic bag picking up trash off the beach, talking to people, all the while photographers snapping his photo. Gilbert is pretty amazing and I got some great shots of him today out there on his board.

Loving Your Work

I've always admired people that earn a living doing what they love. I want to be one of those people. It may be hard to imagine for some but surfing is hard work. To be a surf pro takes drive and determination, not to mention tenacity and pure grit! Although I have better surf photos of Gilbert Brown, this is one of my favorite. Why, because he looks like he loves his work, even the falls.

I met Gilbert yesterday, shook his hand. He had on really dark sunglasses and he looked like a rock star. He was really nice. I was starstruck and tongue-tied. I didn't tell him his photo hangs on my fridge to remind me of what it takes to succeed. It was my pleasure to finally meet him.

I am working on a project so if I post, it will probably be surfing photos for awhile.

Side note:
WELCOME BACK TO YOUR CR HOME Jack and Beth !!
